Caring for Your Nithyam Calendar. How to Keep It Looking Right for the Rest of Your Life.

Updated: 12 hours ago

A Nithyam calendar is designed to require very little maintenance. The whole point of the object is that it is permanent and self-sustaining. But there are a few simple things that will keep it looking and working correctly over years of daily use.

The board surface is finished with a matte lacquer. This finish is durable and resistant to light moisture, but it should not be cleaned with chemical cleaners or abrasive cloths. If the board needs cleaning, a slightly damp soft cloth is all that is required. Wipe gently and allow to dry naturally. Never spray cleaning products directly onto the board.

The markers are painted wood. The paint is applied in two coats and is durable under normal handling conditions. Over years of daily use, the markers that are moved most frequently, primarily the day markers, will develop a slightly smoother surface from regular handling. This is not damage. It is the object wearing in the way a well-used thing should. The colour will remain. The text will remain. The surface will simply acquire the slight polish that comes from being touched often.

The marker ring, the highlight indicator, sits in a slot and should move smoothly when you rotate it to the new position. If it begins to feel tight or loose after extended use, contact us at hello@nithyam.shop. We include spare ring indicators with every calendar and can send replacements if needed. This is the only component that might require replacement over a very long period of use.

If a marker disc becomes loose in its slot over time, it can be re-secured with a small amount of wood glue applied carefully to the slot sides. Apply sparingly, allow to cure fully before moving the marker again, and contact us if you are unsure. We would rather walk you through it than have you damage the board.

The board should not be mounted in direct sunlight for extended periods. Sun exposure over years will fade the board colour and the marker paint unevenly. A wall that receives morning or afternoon light is fine. A wall in direct midday sun for several hours daily is not ideal for any painted wood object.

That is genuinely all the maintenance required. The Nithyam calendar was designed to be used every day and looked after simply. Everything else takes care of itself.
