Nithyam Arambh - Tamil Edition

Arambh means beginning. The Tamil Edition is where Nithyam began, in a Tamil studio, in a Tamil town, made by someone who wanted his own language on his own wall. It was the first edition we made and the one that set the standard for every edition that followed.

Tamil is one of the world's oldest classical languages, with a literary tradition spanning more than two thousand years. The script is visually distinct, rounded, curved, and precise. On the wooden markers of the Arambh, Tamil script reads with a clarity that surprised even us during development. The curves hold at small sizes. The weight is right. The disc looks like it was made for Tamil, because it was.

The day names are rendered in their full abbreviated Tamil forms: ஞாயிறு, திங்கள், செவ்வாய், புதன், வியாழன், வெள்ளி, சனி. The months follow the Gregorian calendar in Tamil script. The dates are in Tamil numerals where appropriate or standard numerals depending on the edition variant.

What It Is

The Nithyam Arambh is a wall-mounted perpetual calendar. It is a wooden board holding rows of circular disc markers, one row for the day of the week, one for the date, and one for the month. Each morning you move three markers to reflect today. The calendar never expires. One purchase. No replacements. No refills. No subscription. It works on 1 January every year, for every year, for as long as it hangs on a wall.

It is not digital. It has no battery. It requires nothing from you except five seconds each morning and a wall to hang it on.

Materials and Finish

• Board: Medium density fibreboard with a premium colour-matched veneer finish. Chosen for stability across humidity changes, which is essential for an object designed to last decades in an Indian home. The board does not warp, does not crack, and holds its finish consistently over time.
• Markers: Solid wood discs, hand-turned on a lathe in our Karamadai workshop. Sanded through four grit levels before painting. Paint applied in two coats with a full dry period between coats. Each disc is inspected individually before acceptance.
• Finish: Matte lacquer on all surfaces. Matte is chosen deliberately over gloss because a calendar touched every morning needs a finish that ages gracefully rather than one that shows every interaction as a fingerprint.
• Highlight ring: The circular indicator ring is turned separately to a higher tolerance than the standard markers. It sits flush in the slot without wobbling and moves smoothly with daily use.

How It Works

Every morning, before anything else, you stand in front of the Arambh and move three markers. The day marker advances one position to today's day. The date marker advances one position to today's date. The month marker stays unless it is the first of a new month, in which case it advances to the new month.

The highlight ring sits around the current marker in each row. You do not move the ring. You move the markers through the ring. The ring stays in position and the markers rotate past it.

The full action takes five seconds. It requires no thought once the habit is established. After the first week, it is simply what you do in the morning.

Available Colours

The Nithyam Arambh is available in five colours: Forest, Clay, Dusk, Blush, and Monsoon. Select your colour from the option shown on the product page. All colours carry the same Tamil script in white. The text colour and ring colour are consistent across all five colour options.

Care Instructions

The Arambh requires very little care. Wipe the board surface with a slightly damp soft cloth if needed. Do not use chemical cleaners or abrasive materials. The markers will develop a slight smoothness on their surface over months of daily handling. This is not damage. It is the object wearing in correctly.

Do not mount in direct midday sunlight for extended periods. Morning light and afternoon light are fine. Prolonged direct sunlight will fade the colour unevenly over years.

If a marker becomes loose in its slot, contact us before attempting any repair.

If Your Calendar Arrives Damaged

• We will arrange a replacement at no cost to you, immediately

If a Component Is Missing

• Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with your order number
• We will dispatch the missing component by the next working day

Change of Mind

• We are unable to accept returns for change of mind - each calendar is made to order specifically for you
• If you are uncertain about any detail before purchasing, contact us first - we are happy to help you decide

Exchanges

• We do not offer exchanges between editions once production has begun
• Please review your selection carefully before checkout

For the Origin Special Edition

• The Origin edition cannot be returned or exchanged once production has begun due to its personalised and limited nature
• If your Origin edition arrives damaged, we will replace it as a priority
