The Nithyam Agam is a handcrafted perpetual calendar made in our studio in Karamadai, Coimbatore. Every knob on this board carries Malayalam script - the day names, the month names, and the date numerals - set in a typeface developed specifically for this format. It is the calendar that never expires, never needs replacing, and never becomes obsolete.
This is not a paper calendar with a Malayalam translation printed on it. Malayalam carries one of the largest character sets of any Indian script, shaped by centuries of conjunct consonants and fine detail in every letterform. Every character was typeset individually, tested for legibility at reading distance, and refined until each mark held its clarity at small size without losing the detail the script depends on. The result is an object that carries your language as it deserves to be carried, completely and correctly.
Each morning you move three rings. The day. The date. The month. Five seconds. That is the entire interaction. The rest of the day, the Agam sits on your wall, doing its job, in your language.

Product Info
Agam is a word Malayalam shares with Tamil, both Dravidian languages with a common root. It means the inner, the interior - the personal, domestic space, as opposed to "puram," the outer, public one. In classical Sangam literature, agam poetry was the poetry of home and private life, of what happens inside four walls rather than out in the world. A calendar that hangs inside your home, that you reach out and touch in the privacy of your own morning, carries that word naturally.
Malayalam is a Dravidian language and the official language of Kerala, one of India's classical languages, with a script that evolved through several earlier writing systems before settling into its current rounded, highly detailed form. It is often noted for having one of the largest character sets among Indian scripts. Rendering it clearly at a small, fixed disc size was one of the more demanding typeface projects we've taken on - and one of the most rewarding.
The day names are rendered in their commonly used Malayalam forms: ഞായർ, തിങ്കൾ, ചൊവ്വ, ബുധൻ, വ്യാഴം, വെള്ളി, ശനി. The months follow the Gregorian calendar in Malayalam script. The dates are in Malayalam numerals where appropriate or standard numerals depending on the edition variant.
What It Is
The Nithyam Agam is a wall-mounted perpetual calendar. It is a plywood board holding rows of circular knobs, one row for the day of the week, one for the date, and one for the month. Each morning you move three rings to reflect today.
The calendar never expires. One purchase. No replacements. No refills. No subscription. It works on 1 January every year, for every year, for as long as it hangs on a wall.
It is not digital. It has no battery. It requires nothing from you except five seconds each morning and a wall to hang it on.
Materials and Finish
- Board: Plywood, chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio and stability across humidity changes, essential for an object designed to last decades in an Indian home.
- Knobs: Made from recycled PET bottle caps, giving each calendar a second life for plastic that would otherwise go to waste. Each knob's day, date, or month value is printed as a high-quality sticker and applied by hand before final inspection.
- Finish: Hand painted, satin-based finish sealed with a protective gloss clear coat across the board and knobs. The satin undertone softens the shine, while the gloss seal is chosen deliberately for a calendar touched every morning - it protects the paint from the wear of daily handling far better than an unsealed matte surface would.
- Ring: Wooden rings, sized to a 40mm inner diameter, slide over the fixed knobs to mark today's day, date, and month. Each ring lifts off and moves to a new knob daily - there's no rotation involved, just a simple lift-and-place motion.

How It Works
Every morning, before anything else, you stand in front of the Agam and move three rings. The day ring lifts off yesterday's knob and moves one position to today's day. The date ring lifts off and moves one position to today's date. The month ring stays in place unless it is the first of a new month, in which case it moves to the new month.
The wooden ring sits around the current knob in each row. You do not move the knobs. You move the ring from knob to knob. The knobs stay fixed in place, and the ring travels between them.
The full action takes five seconds. It requires no thought once the habit is established. After the first week, it is simply what you do in the morning.
Available Colours
The Nithyam Agam is available in five colours: Forest, Clay, Dusk, Blush, and Monsoon. Select your colour from the option shown on the product page. All colours carry the same Malayalam script in white. The sticker text colour and the wooden ring colour are consistent across all five colour options.

Care Instructions
The Agam requires very little care. Wipe the board surface with a slightly damp soft cloth if needed. Do not use chemical cleaners or abrasive materials. The knobs will develop a slight smoothness on their surface over months of daily handling. This is not damage. It is the object wearing in correctly.
Do not mount in direct midday sunlight for extended periods. Morning light and afternoon light are fine. Prolonged direct sunlight will fade the colour unevenly over years.
If a knob becomes loose in its slot, contact us before attempting any repair.

If Your Calendar Arrives Damaged
Send a photograph of the damage to hello@nithyam.shop or WhatsApp +91 9585382557 within 48 hours of delivery. We will arrange a replacement at no cost to you, immediately.
If a Component Is Missing
Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with your order number. We will dispatch the missing component by the next working day.
Change of Mind
We are unable to accept returns for change of mind - each calendar is made to order specifically for you. If you are uncertain about any detail before purchasing, contact us first - we are happy to help you decide.
Exchanges
We do not offer exchanges between editions once production has begun. Please review your selection carefully before checkout.
