The Nithyam Usha is a handcrafted perpetual calendar carrying Kannada script, made in our studio in Karamadai, Coimbatore. Every disc on this board shows the Kannada names for the days and months, typeset with the care that the script demands. This is the calendar made for the Kannada speaker who wants their language on their wall, correctly and permanently.
Usha is the Sanskrit and Vedic word for dawn, one of the oldest words for morning in any language. It is used naturally in Kannada and across South Indian literary tradition. Named Usha because this is a morning object, a thing you touch at the beginning of every day, for the rest of your days.
The Kannada script on the Usha edition was developed with a Kannada reader at every stage of the process. The letterforms are sized for legibility at the distances from which a wall calendar is read. The proportions are right. The script reads as Kannada should read, not as a design choice or a decorative element, but as a working language on a working object.

Kannada is a Dravidian language with a literary tradition spanning more than fifteen hundred years. The script is visually rich, with distinct letterforms that carry a visual rhythm unlike any other Indian script. Getting Kannada letterforms correct at 40mm diameter required specific typographic work. The curves and conjuncts of Kannada script do not simplify at small sizes the way some scripts do. We did not simplify them. We worked until they were right.
The day abbreviations on the Usha edition are rendered in standard Kannada: ಭಾ, ಸೋ, ಮಂ, ಬು, ಗು, ಶು, ಶ for Sunday through Saturday. The months are rendered in their Kannada forms. The dates are in standard Arabic numerals.
The Usha edition is the calendar for Karnataka. For the Bengaluru home office, for the Mysuru living room, for the Kannada speaker anywhere in the world who wants the first thing they see each morning to speak their language.

- Board: Medium density fibreboard with a premium colour-matched veneer finish. Stable across humidity conditions. Consistent finish over time.
- Markers: Solid wood discs, hand-turned in our Karamadai workshop. Four-stage sanding. Two-coat paint with individual inspection.
- Finish: Matte lacquer throughout.
- Highlight ring: Higher tolerance turning. Sits flush. Moves smoothly with daily use.

How It Works
Each morning, three markers move. The day marker advances one position. The date marker advances one position. The month marker advances only on the first of a new month. The ring stays fixed. The markers rotate through it. Five seconds. Done.

If Your Calendar Arrives Damaged

Exchanges
- We do not offer exchanges between editions once production has begun

- The Origin edition cannot be returned or exchanged once production has begun due to its personalised and limited nature
- If your Origin edition arrives damaged, we will replace it as a priority
